The North Eastern Car Club - A Brief History The North Eastern Car Club has a long and interesting history which dates back to 1953. In that year, on January 22 to be precise, Bill Higgins and John Joseph convened a meeting to discuss the possibility of forming a car club in the north east of Victoria to promote car and motorcycle racing. There was sufficient interest generated at that meeting to encourage them to proceed, and on March 10, 1953, the North Eastern Car Club was formed.
The NECC was a motor racing club in the early years, holding races at the Wangaratta Airstrip, and later at a purpose-built track at Tarrawingee, 11km from Wangaratta. So popular were the NECC's race meetings that it was not uncommon for over 7000 people to attend.
Competition from other circuits and the amount of voluntary work involved in maintaining the race track forced the track’s closure and the last meeting was held in November of 1964.
Since that time the club has continued to promote other forms of motorsport, especially car rallies, trials, motorkhanas and social functions. The clubrooms of the NECC are situated at Tarrawingee, just a stone's throw from the remains of the old race track.
Today, some 54 years on, the Club is continuing on with the fine tradition set by those who had the foresight to form a brand new car club.
The club’s main focus in recent years has been gravel rallying, with the regular running of the North Eastern Rally as a round of the Victorian Rally Championship. Many other regular events are also held, including the Whiteknuckles, Autumn and Spring rallies.
A major focus has also been put on junior driver development, and to that end the NECC holds a series of motorkhanas and khanacrosses for drivers as young as 12-years of age. The club sees this program as one of the most important that the club conducts.
General meetings of the club are held on the first Wednesday of each month (excluding January), commencing at 8pm at the clubrooms, Nolan’s Road, Tarrawingee. All new, current and past members are made welcome.
Now 54 years old, the North Eastern Car Club is one of the oldest in Australia, and with a committed committee and membership base, we’re DRIVING INTO THE FUTURE!
